Jan's First Experience with Gourmet Liquor Chocolates

When Jan was taking night classes for her master's degree, there was a rather animated student in one of her classes who was from Russia. On the last evening of classes, he brought in a box of chocolates from Russia to share with the class. He said they were gourmet chocolates. They just appeared to be a box of truffles of gourmet chocolates, so imagine everyone's surprise when they bit into a chocolate that was full of alcohol! (These particular chocolates were full of vodka.)

When the initial surprise wore off, some students were asking for another, while others were asking about these chocolates. "What are they, exactly?" people asked. He explained that they were gourmet liquor chocolates, and they were usually imported. He said gourmet liquor chocolates were hard to find in the U.S.

Later, this guy was in another one of Jan's classes. Again, on the last night of class, he brought in gourmet liquor chocolates. This time, they had different alcohol in them. Jan didn't want to spoil his surprise, so she took one but didn't ask questions about it until after everyone else did. "I thought the only alcohol in gourmet liquor chocolates was vodka. What was in these?" she asked. He explained that these particular ones had scotch in them, but they could also have bourbon. Jan never thought hard alcohol would be a good accompaniment for chocolate, but the melding of the two flavors made the alcohol go down much more smoothly that if you drink it straight up. And the sweetness was a nice balance.

So the next time you want to surprise someone with chocolate (or play a joke on them) give them gourmet liquor chocolates.
